Why 432hz? The Physics, the Research, and the Honest Answer.
If you've spent any time in sound bath circles, you've heard about 432hz.
You've probably also heard some things about it that made you raise an eyebrow. That it's the frequency of the universe. That it was suppressed by the Nazis in favor of 440hz. That it heals DNA. That it resonates with the Schumann resonance of the Earth.
Some of those claims are more supportable than others. Some of them aren't supportable at all.
RSL tunes to 432hz. We want to tell you exactly why -- and exactly what that means and doesn't mean.
FIRST, THE PHYSICS.
Standard Western tuning places the note A above middle C at 440hz -- meaning the string, column of air, or speaker cone vibrates at 440 cycles per second to produce that pitch. This was standardized internationally in 1939 and has been the global convention ever since.
432hz tunes that same note eight cycles per second lower. Everything else in the tuning system moves proportionally -- the whole instrument is shifted slightly downward.
The difference is subtle. Most people cannot distinguish 432hz from 440hz by ear in a blind test. The interval between the two tunings is less than a quarter tone -- smaller than the smallest interval in Western music.
So what's the claim, and what does the evidence actually say?
WHAT THE RESEARCH SHOWS.
A small number of studies have compared the physiological and psychological effects of music played at 432hz versus 440hz. The results are modest and the methodology in most cases is limited -- small sample sizes, inconsistent controls, short duration.
One frequently cited study found slightly lower heart rate and blood pressure in participants listening to 432hz versus 440hz recordings. Another found subjective reports of greater relaxation. These are interesting findings. They are not conclusive findings.
What the research hasn't produced -- despite the confident claims you'll find in wellness circles -- is robust, replicated evidence that 432hz produces meaningfully different physiological outcomes than 440hz at the level some advocates suggest.
The more expansive claims -- DNA healing, universal frequency resonance, Nazi suppression conspiracies -- have no credible scientific support. We're not going to pretend otherwise.
WHAT THE CLAIMS ARE ACTUALLY ABOUT.
There's a real phenomenon underneath the more extravagant claims, even if the claims themselves overreach.
Different tunings do produce different acoustic qualities in instruments -- particularly acoustic ones. A crystal bowl, a gong, a hang drum tuned to 432hz has a slightly different resonant character than the same instrument tuned to 440hz. Many musicians and listeners report that 432hz feels warmer, more resonant, somehow more at ease in the body.
This is worth taking seriously as a perceptual and acoustic phenomenon, even if the mechanism isn't fully understood and the research is limited.
It's also worth noting that 440hz as a standard is relatively recent and somewhat arbitrary. For most of Western music history, pitch standards varied widely by region and era -- A has been as low as 415hz and as high as 466hz in historical practice. The idea that 440hz is somehow the "natural" or "correct" tuning is itself not well-founded.
WHY RSL TUNES TO 432HZ.
Here's the honest answer: the practice informed the decision.
We tune to 432hz because it sounds right to us. The acoustic quality of instruments at 432hz -- the warmth, the resonance, the way certain frequencies interact -- is more conducive to the experience we're creating. This isn't a claim about healing or universal resonance. It's an aesthetic and practical judgment made over years of playing and listening.
We also find that participants consistently report a qualitative difference when sessions are tuned to 432hz versus 440hz -- though we've never run a controlled study and can't make clinical claims about it.
The honest position is this: the science doesn't fully support the stronger claims made about 432hz. The practice suggests something real is happening. We're comfortable sitting in that uncertainty and continuing to tune the way we tune.
What we won't do is overclaim in either direction -- neither pretending the research is more conclusive than it is, nor dismissing the genuine acoustic and perceptual phenomenon that practitioners and participants consistently report.
THE BOTTOM LINE.
432hz is not magic. It's not suppressed ancient wisdom. It's not healing your DNA.
It is a tuning choice with a real acoustic character -- warmer and slightly more resonant in certain instruments -- that has modest supporting research and significant anecdotal support from musicians and listeners.
We tune to 432hz because it works for what we're doing. That's the whole answer.
